How to use Ghost Cast Server 11.5 to deploy Windows 7 images
Ghost Cast Server 11.5 is a tool that allows you to create and deploy disk images of Windows 7 to multiple computers over a network. It is part of the Symantec Ghost Solution Suite v2.5, which also includes Ghost Console and Ghost Boot Wizard. In this article, we will show you how to use Ghost Cast Server 11.5 to create and deploy a sys-prepped Windows 7 x64 image to a new HP Elitedesk 800 G1 SFF computer.
Step 1: Create a sys-prepped Windows 7 x64 image
A sys-prepped image is an image that has been prepared for deployment by using the System Preparation Tool (sysprep.exe) in Windows 7. Sysprep removes system-specific information such as computer name, security identifier (SID), and product activation data from the image, so that it can be applied to different computers without causing conflicts. To create a sys-prepped image, follow these steps:
Install Windows 7 x64 on a reference computer that has the same hardware configuration as the target computers.
Install any applications, drivers, updates, and settings that you want to include in the image.
Run sysprep.exe from C:\\Windows\\System32\\sysprep folder. Choose Enter System Out-of-Box Experience (OOBE), check Generalize, and select Shutdown as the shutdown option.
After the computer shuts down, boot it from a Ghost boot disk or USB drive that has Ghost32.exe or Ghost64.exe on it.
Run Ghost32.exe or Ghost64.exe and choose Local > Disk > To Image. Select the source disk that contains the Windows 7 partition and choose a destination file name and location for the image file. For example, D:\\Images\\Win7x64.GHO.
Click OK to start the imaging process. Wait until it finishes and then remove the boot disk or USB drive.
Step 2: Create a Ghost boot disk with WinPE 3.1 and Intel I217-LM driver
A Ghost boot disk is a disk that allows you to boot a computer into a preinstalled environment (PE) that has Ghost32.exe or Ghost64.exe on it. You can use it to connect to a Ghost Cast Server and receive or send an image over a network. To create a Ghost boot disk with WinPE 3.1 and Intel I217-LM driver, follow these steps:
Download and install Windows Automated Installation Kit (AIK) for Windows 7 SP1 from here.
Download and extract WinPE 3.1 CAB files from here.
Copy the WinPE 3.1 CAB files to C:\\Program Files\\Windows AIK\\Tools\\PETools\\x86\\WinPE_FPs folder.
Open an elevated command prompt and run the following commands:
copype.cmd x86 C:\\WinPE_x86
copy \"C:\\Program Files\\Windows AIK\\Tools\\x86\\imagex.exe\" C:\\WinPE_x86\\iso
copy \"C:\\Program Files\\Symantec\\Ghost\\Ghost32.exe\" C:\\WinPE_x86\\iso
copy \"C:\\Program Files\\Symantec\\Ghost\\GhostSrv.exe\" C:\\WinPE_x86\\iso
